Be the person you want to be!

I know how difficult it can be to lose weight. I struggled with weight loss previously and I’ve experienced the same desperation: doing everything I can to lose weight and getting nowhere.

If you’re in that same situation, it might be because of your gut. You might not think that this has any relevance to your weight loss, but your digestive system does play a crucial role in your wellbeing.

If you want to lose weight, take a look to see how improving your gut health might help.

The Importance of a Healthy Gut for Weight Loss

Gut Bacteria

Your body had trillions of bacteria in it, many of which are within your intestines. With so much bacteria in your intestines and gut, it’s important to keep those bacteria working properly.

They are what produce the chemicals that make you feel full after all, which is how they may affect your weight.

These bacteria will further work to produce essential vitamins like vitamin K while communicating with your immune system to fight off infection.

They influence how you digest food, which nutrients you absorb, and how energy is stored in your body. Having fewer types of bacteria in your gut has been found to point to obesity.

Gut Health and Obesity

It’s true that it’s not 100 percent clear on how gut health affects your weight, and that this is a new research area that needs to be explored more fully.

That being said, there have been studies done that show how the bacteria in the gut may lead to obesity, and therefore to weight loss.

For instance, when bacteria from obese individuals are placed in mice, they have been found to gain weight. So, what can you do to fix this bacterial situation?

Improving Your Gut Health

You may not be able to see what bacteria you specifically have in your gut, but you can help to improve your gut health with a few dietary and lifestyle changes. Not only will this help lead to weight loss, but it can help you feel physically better too.

Following a Fibrous Diet

Fiber is one of the best nutrients to focus on. There are a lot of delicious foods that are high fiber too, like fruits with the skin on, and leafy vegetables. Go for fiber-rich fruits such as oranges, apples and strawberries. When it comes to vegetables, try to reach for vegetables such as broccoli that are darker in colour. In general, these are the vegetables that are higher in fiber.

Eating more of these foods will promote different types of bacteria, and will help you maintain your weight loss over time.

Take it slow when you first begin though. Gradually increase your fiber intake over time instead of changing your whole diet right away. Drink plenty of water too, which will help clear out your gut.

Fixing Your Gut

You may also consider taking a high-quality probiotic. This may take some time to get used to at first, but it will restore healthy gut flora. It may also help to treat any intestinal pathogens that might be present.

Beyond medication, stress is a huge factor that can negatively impact both your gut and your weight loss. You can’t always be rid of your stress, but it would be beneficial to find ways to reduce your stress levels over time.

What to Avoid

To fully fix your gut, the biggest thing to avoid is sugary foods. These foods stimulate the growth of unhealthy bacteria in the gut, which contributes to weight gain.

Artificial sweeteners are another culprit, adding to high blood sugar as well. Try to avoid foods with unhealthy fats too. Fish, which has many omega-3s, is something that may help your gut, versus something high in saturated fats.
